Leonard Brett studied fine arts at the Vancouver School of Art, graduating with honours in 1966. He did post graduate studies in Lithography at Emily Carr in 1984. He received his M.F.A in visual arts from Concordia University in 1991.

Leonard also taught a wide range of subjects in the same institutions, including Douglas College. One of the most enjoyable teaching assignments was his watercolour workshops in the British Columbia schools system. He was a founding member, president and designer of the Dundarave Print Workshop on Granville Island. Leonard painted in Paris Franc 1980-81. Over the years he has worked in almost every painting and printmaking technique there is.

This experimental nature is always present in his work but he also has command of difficult classical techniques such as metal engraving and fresco painting. He also worked in the film industry as a scenic artist from 1992-2012. and learned many faux techniques as well as how to paint with speed. His wide range of materials, techniques and images has resulted in many shows in Canada and abroad. His latest books “A surrealist Alphabet” and “Short Bear tales “is a multi-media combination of visual techniques and writing.
